Nearing its 100th anniversary, Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP) is the oldest continuously operating youth orchestra in the U.S. Under the musical direction of David Hattner, PYP inspires young musicians through high-quality music education and the opportunity to perform repertoire that parallels many professional orchestras.
The performances, educational opportunities, and outreach programs provided by PYP are vast and varied and include four orchestras, a wind ensemble, and a percussion ensemble. Free children’s concerts, a peer mentor program, classes, conductor visits, and a piano competition are among the many community events offered each year.
The AV Department recently supported PYP in transforming their annual breakfast fundraiser into a virtual event. The health and safety of the performers and guests warranted the difficult decision to move Meet the Musicians to an online platform. The event was livestreamed from the PYP offices and featured performances by a string quartet from PYP’s Young String Ensemble and PYP’s co-principal bassist Maggie Carter, guest appearances by Musical Director David Hattner, community leaders, and a fundraising appeal by benefit auctioneer gEvents, LLC. During the livestream, PYP shared their new organizational video, which The AV Department media team was honored to help produce.
With quick and nimble marketing, PYP promoted the virtual event on their website, on social media, and directly to guests planning to attend the event. Segments of the broadcast were also shown live on both Facebook and Instagram, encouraging followers to tune in to the livestream. Viewers were invited to share their location via chat, text, and social media. Within eight hours, the views of the recorded stream nearly doubled the number of guests who had been expected for the in-person event. Local news media also reported on the virtual event.
Funds raised during Meet the Musicians provide access to concerts, lessons, coaching and conductors, sparking young talent and a life-long love of music. The virtual event allowed PYP friends, supporters, and alumni to experience the event and support the fundraiser from anywhere, at any time.
